Protecting Platypus Habitat in Narracan Creek and Morwell River

Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network are excited to announce the Protecting Platypus Habitat in Narracan Creek and Morwell River Project, proudly funded by Energy Australia.

The project is focused on protecting platypus habitat in Narracan Creek and Morwell River and reducing sediment runoff into the Latrobe River system. The Network is currently seeking Expressions of Interest from landholders with Narracan Creek or Morwell River frontage who would be interested in fencing off the creek area to stock and revegetate the riparian zone.

The Network will subsidise fencing works (at $10 /mt) and provide all trees (at no cost to the landholder) required for the project.

The second part of the project is a Platypus conservation and education program designed to promote the importance of preserving and restoring habitat along Narracan Creek and Morwell River. The Platypus Education Group will be visiting schools to teach students about the platypus and healthy waterways.

If your school would like to take part in the conservation and education program get in contact with us today!

PLATYPUS MYSTERIES TO BE REVEALED

The platypus is one of the world's most amazing animals. This furry, warm-blooded mammal lays soft-shelled eggs like a lizard, uses its bill to navigate underwater, and sorts out arguments with the help of venomous spurs. The platypus is also among the most popular of Australia's animal icons - a great flagship species for freshwater conservation. But what about the platypus's own environmental needs? How is the species faring in our region? And what needs to be done to ensure that our platypus populations survive into a future made uncertain by climate change?

Latrobe Catchment Landcare has arranged for Geoff Williams from the Australian Platypus Conservancy to share his knowledge of this fascinating monotreme in an online information session on Tuesday 25 October at 7pm.
