Friends of Land and Water Landcare Subgroup

When the Lifestyle Village in Warragul was first built and opened in 2008-9, it had (outside the northern boundary, between the Village and the M1 Freeway) several acres of damaged and degraded land owned by VICROADS. The Landcare group "Friends of Land and Water" was formed in May 2010, as a condition laid down by VICROADS, entitling a group of enthusiastic Villagers to work on and improve that land under WGCMA supervision.

The first part of the project was a huge clean-up. Apart from damamged trees and bushes, the land contained blocks of concrete, old tyres, head-high thistles, and any other rubbish that had been dumped over the years. The clean-up took a year. Then the ground was prepared for the planting of trees and bushes, similar to what was left of the original vegetation: some wattles, blackwoods, grevilleas and callistemons, with bushes suited to the surroundings: over 700 plants.

Since mid-2011, the focus has been on maintaining and improving the trees and bushes, and making the land into a place where people (from the Village and the town) like to walk. So the brief aims for FLW are concerned with keeping the territory attractive and congenial, and we also do WaterWatch work at a nearby test-point.
